March 2010

Jan Bjoersland from the Titan Poker Team goes to the Gala Casino at Coventry to play at the tables of the UKPT

Talk about getting back to reality with poor starting hands and nothing but rags in the tournament...Well, except for a couple of big pairs it was dry all over the place.

Anyway... here's how it went down at the Gala Casino.

It's back to England this time and the UKIPT £500+£50 tournament is at the Gala Casino in Coventry. 370 players joined this one, divided into two starting days. 15,000 chips and a 60 minutes clock.

Level 1 (25-50): Picked up a couple of small pots within the first 20 minutes. Then I get 6d 8c in the small blind. A guy who's raised the previous two hands pre-flop makes it 200 from 6th position and gets two callers. I re-raise and make it 1,450 to play. A nice squeeze in the early stages to mix it up a little bit and it's folded around to me. 10 minutes later, A5s on the button. The guy who won the Irish Open this year makes it150 to play. I call with position on him. 3d 4c 8s on the flop gives me a gutshot draw for a straight. 225 from a player to my right and I call with the intention of taking down the pot later. 9c on the turn. He checks and 500 from me is enough to make him fold. 1000 chips up already.

Level 2 (50-100) went by without playing a single hand. 15,500 in chips and 5 players out.

Level 3 (75-150): Limping in with 77 from 4th position. 300 from 6th position and 7th calls. I obviously have to call but with the flop K-2-5 I am out when the betting starts.

Level 3: AKoff in the small blind. 3 limpers and I limp in as well. BB makes it 750 to play. I call but with a rag board showing 5-6-9 I check and fold after the initial raiser has made it 1,200. 13,800 in chips.

Level 4 (100-200): Only 4 players out. 10 minutes into the level I pick up JJ in 4th position. 450 from me and a quick re-raise to 1,250 from 7th position. I call and it's a good flop for my jacks. 6d-3h-4c. I check and he bets out 1600.

Now I have a difficult decision on my hand. Did he re-raise with a monster and has me crushed already or is he just making a continuation bet with AK? It's still early in the tournament and if I call on the flop I guess I have to pay even more on the turn and river only to find out that I am maybe way behind here. I decide to make a difficult lay down. If it was later in the tournament my chips would have gone all in at this point.

Level 4: QQ in 6th position. 450 from me and my good friend, Richard Horton, calls. 2-7-9 all spades on the flop. I check to trap and Richard checks behind. 8c on the turn. 500 from me and he calls. Q on the river gives me the set and now I have to make a value bet here but a 1000 from me was a little bit too much and Richard folds.

Level 5 (150-300) A8 in 6th position. 625 from me and BB calls. Kd-Jc-Td. Check from BB. 1,200 from me and a re-raise to 2,600. F O L D ! ! ! 9,000 chips left now.

Level 6 (150-300 25 ante): Picking up blinds and antes with A9 off from 7th position. 130 players left. 7,500 chips.

Level 7 (200-400 50 ante): 120 players left. Average is 22k and I got 8,000.

Level 8 (300-600 75 ante): Didn't play one hand on level 7. AQ on the button and move all in. 6,000 chips now and average is above 25,000. 104 players left.

Level 8: All in with 55 from 5th position. 7,000 chips and 98 players left. 15 minutes later I pick up AQs in 5th position and go all in. I get two callers (!) and that was NOT the scenario I had pictured when I pushed with the dreaded ace-queen. I am up against 99 and a pair of tens. Actually, two good hands to be up against with two overcards but no picture cards on the flop and I am out in 95th position. Close to a triple up, but you can only play the cards you're dealt and in this tournament the cards didn't come my way to say it in the mildest.

I also played the £300+£30 side event and got knocked out in Level 6 with a pair of tens against AK. It was all in before the flop and a lovely ace on the turn took care of my exit. Finished 27th out of 44 players in this one.

In the middle of May I am going back to my favorite card room....Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham and play the £500+£50 UKIPT there. The tournament has a cap of 800 players and should generate a nice pricepool!

That was it! I would have loved to triple up with AQ there but Lady Luck wasn't on my side.
