February 2009

Titan Team member Damian Ciomperlik (Germany) competed in one of the most historical casinos in Europe – The Casino Wiesbaden in Wiesbaden, Germany. This is his reflection of the event.

First Tournament - February 1st, 2009 (Buy-In 75 EUR - 6 places paid)

I got off to a bad start at my first tournament. I was late for the start and when I finally took my seat the blinds were already raised to 50/100. I then did not get good cards and my stack got smaller and smaller.

I was down to 1600 chips when I got 9,9 and I went All-In and was able to double my chips. A few hands later, I was in the small blind position and all the players folded. With A,5 I went All-In. The Big Blind called with KQ suited. The board was 10,10, 5, J, A and so I was able to raise my chips again.

There were now 12 players left. With K,Q off suit I went All-In again. The Blinds were 500/1000 and the Big Blind called my 5000 chips with AJ and won. I finished the tournament in 12th place.

Second Tournament - February 5th, 2009 (Buy-In 75 EUR - 6 places paid)

I was Card Dead when I got AJ off suit and went with All-In with 800 chips. Two players called. One player had Q,10 and the other 9, 9. The board showed A J 10 J 2. I had a Full House and was able to triple my chips. Two hands later I went All-In again and so did the other player. The hands involved were A,Q (for me) K,10 and 5,5. On the river I got an Ace and 6500 chips.

A few hands later I had 8,3 off suit and was in the Big Blind position. Only the Small Blind called. The flop was 8,3,5 which was good for me. The Small Blind checked and I was betting 1200 when he went All-In. I showed my two pairs and he showed me his K,Q off suit. The Queen on the turn did not help him anymore and I added a few more chips to my stack.

At this point I had a good stack and was happy to get A,K suited in an earlier position. I raised to 3000 and one player went All-In with 5500 chips. I called and he showed A,10. I felt very optimistic. Then the flop showed 8,9,J, in diamonds. He was holding a 10 of diamonds and the turns showed a Queen. No help on the river for me and my stack was now down to 4500 chips-Blinds 600/1200.

A few hands later I got A,3 offsuit on the Small Blind with my stack of 3000 chips. All the players folded and I went again All-In. The big stack next to me called and showed, of course there was an A,8 suited. Both of us got the Ace on the flop. Unfortunately because of the better kicker he won and I finished in 14th place.

Third Tournament - February 9th, 2009 (Buy-In 300 EUR - 10 places paid)

When the tournament began I had some bad luck with my cards. After a failed bluff, my stack went down to 2600 chips from 5000. After awhile things started to turn around after I got A,9 in hearts and made a call for 200. There are now 6 players in the Pot. Flop 4,6,2 and two cards have hearts. The Big Blind bets and all the other players start folding. I knew before that he was on tilt, because he lost 5000 Euro in Black Jack. I went All-In and he immediately called. On the flop I got the flush and was able to double my stack.

Later on I got a J, 10 and my stack was about 10,000. All of the players folded except for the Big Blind. He was a new player at the table and I was not familiar with his game. Flop –Q,8,6 – Check,Check. Turn-Ace. I checked again but he bet 1500. I was almost positive that he did not have an ace so check and raise to 3000 but he called. The Jack on the river gave a pair and because of his call on the river and the same stack size I decided to check. I was unsure of his hand and he went All-In with his chips. I was very positive at this point that he had nothing, because he would bet less if he had the better hand and could win more chips from my stack. At the last moment I decided to fold my pair of Jacks because he was a new player at the table. The only reason for the fold was that I did know his style of game play. In the end, he showed me his bluff with 5,3 offsuit.

After this hand I was able to raise my stack to 10000 with a full house. At this point I played very tight until the blinds raised to 1000/2000. I had to go All-In a few times to stay in the game. There were only 11 players and 10 players will be paid. A player with a stack of 20000 went All-In and because I was unsure if I would get a good hand again I went All-In with my 13000 chips and A,K. He showed me K,Q in Clubs and I was not unhappy about this. Ofcourse he eventually had a flush and I was, once again the bubble boy.

I have not been very lucky at the Wiesbaden Casino up until now, but I am sure I will be in the money in one of the tournaments.

Fourth Tournament - February 23rd, 2009 (Buy-In 500 EUR - 6 places paid)

For this tournament I changed my strategy. My opponents played very tight. No All-ins at all, only a few shortstacks.

When the action began, I also played tight. After a while, I changed the way I was playing and took advantage of the image my opponents had of me as a tight player. I was never in any danger of being kicked out of the tournament. With a straight, winning J,J against 10,10 and with Aces I was able to become be the chip leader when there were only 20 players left.

At the final table there were a few big stacks and I started to play tight again because I did not get good cards. I watched one short stack after the other be kicked out of the tournament. One player at the final table played very aggressive and went most of the time Pre-Flop All-in. The same thing happened to me when I was in the small blind with K,6, I folded and he showed me the same hand I had.

There were four players left and I now had the short stack. One other player had nearly the same amount of chips as me. The other two players had more than double our stacks. After my KQ suited and an AA the chip leader showed and I was now down to 35,000 chips. Once again I got KQ offsuit and I decided to push because the blinds were raised to 1500/3000. He called with A,2 offsuit and got his Ace. When it was all over, I finished in fourth place and won 2,050 Euro.
