The WPT was the brainchild of Steven Lipscomb, an attorney from Texas. In 2001, Lipscomb followed through on his dream to make poker a major sport. In order to turn his conceptualization a reality, Lipscomb, a successful attorney and television producer, had to merge poker tournaments with television. So, with hat in hand, Lipscomb talked the Travel Channel into televising his newly formed WPT.

The World Poker Tour became an overnight success as Lipscomb, who understood the impact of the visual image, was able to get his product out via television. He began his marriage with T.V. in 2002, and his endeavor took off when he was able to get Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patton to host the televised shows. These two guys could make a tortoise race seem exciting.

Before long, the WPT was among the top rated sports shows on television. The poker tour is going strong today as new players are making a name for themselves in poker tournaments on T.V. During this year’s campaign, newcomer Yevgeniy Timoshenko, has amassed $2.15 million on the WPT, and he barely looks old enough to drive a car. In a distant second place is Ran Azor who has won $1.5 million in poker championship play on the World Poker Tour.
